چکیده

Decision makers often save money for a specific goal by forgoing discretionary consumption and instead putting the money toward the savings goal. We hypothesized that reference points can be exploited to enhance this type of saving. In two hypothetical scenario studies, subjects made judgments of their likelihood to forgo a small expenditure in order to put the money toward the savings goal. In Experiment 1, judgments were higher if the savings goal was presented as composed of weekly subgoals (e.g., save $60 per week to buy a $180 iPod). Experiment 2 replicated this finding and demonstrated that the subgoal manipulation increased judgments of likelihood to save money only when the money saved from the foregone consumption would allow the decision maker to meet the weekly subgoal exactly (not under or overshoot it). These results suggest a reference point mechanism and point to ways that behavioral decision research can be harnessed to improve economic behaviors.

Preliminary SAVING AND REFERENCE GROUPS

I consider how the saving behavior of consumers is affected by incomes in their reference group. Although standard life cycle models with interdependent preferences provide no clear cut prediction of how incomes in one’s reference group should influence savings, the empirical analysis points to an unambiguously negative effect: If incomes in the reference group are higher, savings are lower. Th...

Roughness in modules by using the notion of reference points

module over a ring is a general mathematical concept for many examples of mathematicalobjects that can be added to each other and multiplied by scalar numbers. In this paper, we consider a module over a ring as a universe and by using the notion of reference points, we provide local approximations for  subsets of the universe.

Subgoal Partitioning and Global Search for Solving Temporal Planning Problems in Mixed Space

We study in this paper the partitioning of the constraints of a temporal planning problem by subgoals, their sequential evaluation before parallelizing the actions, and the resolution of inconsistent global constraints across subgoals. Using an l1-penalty formulation and the theory of extended saddle points, we propose a global-search strategy that looks for local minima in the original-variabl...

SGPlan: Subgoal Partitioning and Resolution in Planning

We have developed SGPlan, a planner that competes in the Fourth International Planning Competition. SGPlan partitions a large planning problem into subproblems, each with its own subgoal, and resolves inconsistent solutions of subgoals using our extended saddle-point condition. Subgoal partitioning is effective because each partitioned subproblem involves a substantially smaller search space th...

Neural Subgoal Generation using Backpropagation

Building a world model takes exponential computational costs with the number of obstacles. In real world applications are usually many obstacles, possibly changing their positions over time. In order to cope with a changing environment, a solution has to be adaptive. In order to plan complex trajectories, a system that plans hierarchically shows many advantages. In this article we report on res...
